Can an online white-noise generator work offline?

This site can cache its page and audio worklet after a successful visit, so later visits may work without a network connection. The sound itself is generated locally rather than streamed. Source ↗

At a glance
  • The signal is calculated locally, not streamed.
  • The PWA caches core files after an online visit.
  • Clearing site data can remove the offline copy.

How to try it

Open the tool once while connected, then test airplane mode on your own device. Keep the browser or installed PWA available; clearing site data removes the cache and requires another online visit.

What to consider

Offline availability can vary by browser storage policy. SleepMix is the dedicated iPhone option when you need predictable app access to saved mixes.

How the generator avoids streaming

After the page and its audio worklet load, white, pink and brown noise are produced from local calculations. There is no long remote audio file to buffer. The PWA service worker caches the shell and core JavaScript so a later visit may reload those files without a network connection.

The website still needs a successful first load. A browser that clears site data or evicts storage may require you to go online again. Do not treat “installable” as a guarantee of permanent local storage.

Perform a real offline check

Open the page while online and allow it to settle. If your browser offers an install option, adding the icon can make future access easier. Then turn on airplane mode, reopen the site and press Play. This tests both the cached page and the audio worklet, not merely the presence of an icon.

We verified this sequence in desktop Chromium on the deployed preview: the page reloaded offline and generated audio started. That does not prove every phone browser will keep it cached or continue playback after lock.

What the service worker can and cannot do

A service worker can answer network requests from a cache, but it is not an always-running audio process. The MDN PWA guide describes browsers stopping inactive workers. When you press Play, the open page owns the Web Audio context.

If the device suspends that page, having cached files does not keep sound audible. Test offline access and locked-screen continuity as separate behaviors.

Plan for a lost cache

A browser update, storage cleanup or privacy setting can remove cached files. Before travel, open the tool and repeat the airplane-mode check. Keep a backup if sound is important in a place without connectivity.

The SleepMix iPhone app offers a more dedicated saved-mix experience, but a new output device still requires you to check volume. Both web and native sound should be set gently.

Privacy and local generation

The tool does not request microphone permission or upload the generated samples. Ordinary page requests still reach the hosting service during an online visit, and external App Store links leave this site. Offline use avoids those page requests until the browser next connects.

If you clear the browser’s site storage, the cache and any future local preferences are removed. No listening history is stored by this site.

The quick answer for a trip

Open the page at home. Let it load. Turn off your network and open it once more. Press Play. If you hear sound, you have a working offline copy right now. If you do not, go back online and try again. Do this before you leave for a place with poor service. A saved icon alone is not proof that the cache is ready.

Common questions

Do I need to download an MP3?

No. This browser generator calculates samples continuously once its code is loaded.

Will the first visit work without internet?

No. Visit successfully while connected and confirm that the cache is ready before going offline.

Is offline behavior identical in every browser?

No. Storage policies and eviction differ, so test airplane mode on your device.
